In an English as a Second Language program (ESL, also called ELA-E), all of your student’s classes are taught in English. Teachers in this program have been specially trained to help students learn English while they learn other subjects such as reading, science and math. Your school may also offer additional support in your home language through a native language tutor or an ELA-S Resource teacher. In addition, your student will receive a daily class period dedicated to building a strong foundation to learn how to listen, read, speak and write in English, called English Language Development (ELD).

These programs serve speakers of all languages. To choose this option, select “Option 2” on the Parent Permission Form that you will receive at registration.

Some DPS schools do not have an MLE Program. If your student attends one of these schools, all of their classes will be taught in English. Teachers in this program have been specially trained to help students learn English while they learn other subjects such as reading, science and math.
